How to please my mother?

by Susan
(N.Y.)

My mother of 54 recently had a hysterectomy. Before this, she was in pain a lot. I have always done my best to be considerate, help her out and also tried to please her.

After she returned from the hospital my mother recovered physically, but emotionally did not seem to get to better spirits. I try to cheer her up, for example propose to go out do some shopping and she sneers at me that she doesn't have the energy to go shopping. I bring her her favorite foods, but she can't be pleased with it. At this point, I don't know what I can do and feel very frustrated. Any advice on this?

Advice

Dear Susan,

First of all, don't take it personally. You mother may be in a difficult period of her life when her body is changing and she may feel insecure about these changes.

This doesn't mean she doesn't love you or appreciate you and your efforts to please her and help her out.

But do ask her how you can be of better help and what would cheer her up.
This way you can be sure your efforts will be on target.

All the best to you and your mother!
